JANUARY 26 through FEBRUARY 8, 2009

Phoenix Chinese Week Committee, in cooperation with the Phoenix Sister Cities Commission, Phoenix Sister Cities Taipei Committee, City of Taipei and Taipei City Council is proud to present PHOENIX CHINESE WEEK 2009,  a series of cultural, social and educational events celebrating the rich and diverse Chinese ethnic and cultural heritage of 5,000 years. Phoenix Chinese Week 2009 events will be held throughout the greater Phoenix area from January 26th thru February 8th. 2009.  Highlights of this tribute to the Valley's Chinese community, Phoenix's Sister Cities of Taipei, Taiwan, will include a three-day Culture and Cuisine Festival, a variety performance show from Taipei, Taiwan; Children's Pavilion and a Chinese New Year Banquet to celebrate the Lunar Festival.  Phoenix Chinese Week 2009 will also be a special double celebration to honor the 30th Anniversary of Phoenix and Taipei Sister Cities' long lasting relationship and friendship established in 1979.

The Chinese New Year is traditionally celebrated on the first day of the first lunar moon.  In Chinese, the lunar New Year is known as "Spring Festival".  According to the Chinese Zodiac, this is the Year of the OX or Year 4707.  The OX symbolizes and possesses qualities and characteristics of being patient, determined, traditional. reilable, principled, purposeful and intelligent. People born in the Year of the Ox enjoy jogging, swimming, long-distance running, interior decorating, gardening, reading, body-building, tracing family history, painting and designing. Ox's make great gardeners, carpenters, mechanics, realtors/estate agents, farmers, miners and painters. They are compatible with the Rat, Snake and Rooster, but their opposites are the Sheep, Dragon, Horse and Dog.

Chinese Cultural Journeys and School Outreaches
Phoenix Chinese Week's Children's Pavilion will have Chinese Culture Journeys and School Outreaches that provide complimentary instructions and demonstrations honoring 5,000 years of Chinese culture with hands on experiences of Chinese calligraphy, paper cutting, paper folding and  folk arts & crafts to schools, culture events and corporations.

Phoenix Chinese Week Art Contest
Students from kindergarten to ninth grade are eligible to participate in Chinese Week's Painting/Drawing Contest with the theme "What I Know about Chinese Culture".

The deadline for submissions is Saturday, January 17th, 2009. No extensions.

Phoenix Chinese Week Taiji Tournament

The Taiji tournament is co-sponsored by Phoenix Chinese Week and the Phoenix Taiji Club.  There will be five competitions: Taiji Quan solo for men and women,  Taiji Sword for men and women, and group Taiji Quan/Taiji Sword (3 to 6 people per group)..  Everyone is welcome to join the competition and to celebrate the Year of the OX.
Admission to each competition is $5.00 per competitor.

The opening reception and press conference kick off the week-long celebration and activities of Phoenix Chinese Week 2009 and opening of the Taipei 30th Anniversary Photo Art and Culture Exhibit and  the Chinese New Year with live entertainment, refreshments and to acknowledge the affiliation between Phoenix Chinese Week and the cities of Phoenix and Taipei.

Official Grand Opening Ceremony

Phoenix Chinese Week Committee along with Phoenix Sister Cities, Phoenix sister cities Taipei Committee and local and Taipei dignitaries will kick off  Phoenix Chinese Week 2009 Culture and Cuisine Festival.  The official opening ceremony will feature lion and dragon dances,  live entertainment and cultural performances.

Experience the sights, sounds and tastes of the 19th annual Phoenix Chinese Week's Culture and Cuisine Festival.  Enjoy continuous live entertainment including the famous dragon and lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, folk & traditional dances, musical performances, popular Children's Pavilion and more.  Shop at souvenir and arts & crafts booths, experience outstanding cultural performances and taste scrumptious and authentic Chinese cuisines.  This event is free and open to the public, but parking is $5 per vehicle (partial proceeds from parking go to cultural events, education & scholarships).

Taipei Dragon Boat Display        February 6, 7 and 8, 2009

Traditional dragon boat donated by the city of Taipei, Taiwan to the City of Phoenix in honor of the Phoenix and Taipei Sister Cities strong relationship.
**Please excuse the mess - The Dragon Boat is in the process of being refurbished and re-painted to bring it back to it's original state.

Children's Pavilion    February 6, 7 and 8, 2009

The Children's Pavilion provides free and exciting children's activities and instruction and demonstrations of Chinese calligraphy, translating English names into Mandarin Chinese, paper folding, dough art, paper cuttings and other cultural arts and crafts.  Children of all ages can enjoy the complimentary cultural hands-on activities reflecting 5,000 years of Chinese culture, folk arts & crafts, customs and heritage.

Koi Exhibit and Auction Show
Valley of the Sun Koi Club is sponsoring the 2009 Greater Phoenix Koi auction. See quality Koi that will be auctioned on Sunday at noon. There also will be vendors from around the conuntry for all of your pond or water garden needs.

See 5,000 years of  Chinese culture on display and experience what the Chinese contributed to the world.  Learn how to use the abacus - the "Chinese computer" - to solve mathematical problems and discover other inventions, including the printing block, kites, compasses and more.  Glimpse the traditional attire of the different Chinese dynasties.  pictures, Chinese puppets, Tangrams and other artifacts depicting the history of Chinese inventions also will be exhibited.

Featuring photos of the Chinese community in the Valley from the past to the present, showing different organizations and services at work and play.

Mah-Jong Booth

Learn the art of Mah-Jong tiles as you watch demonstrations and have an opportunity to try your hand at this popular game.

Phoenix Chinese Week Volleyball Tournament

This annual event is co-sponsored by Phoenix Chinese Week and is open to the public. The registration fee is $8 per person.  Only 12 teams will be accepted. Entry deadline is January 31st, 2009.

Phoenix Cup Weiqi (GO) Open Tournament

This is the Fifth Phoenix Cup Weiqi (Go) Open Tournament.  The tournament is co-sponsored by Phoenix Chinese Week and the AZ Go Club of AGA (American GO Association).
The tournament is free and open to the public. All games will be played according to AGA rules.  The tournament will adapt the partial circulation method for the games. A totla of 3 rounds will be played. 
There will be 3 sections: (A) 2d and above,  (B) 5k - 1d and (C) 6k and below.
Everyone is welcome tocelebrate the Year of the Ox, and promote Weiqi (Go), an important element of Chinese Culture.
